Description of the Organisation and Its Members
The Technical Chamber of Greece (TCG) was established in 1923. It is a public-law legal entity governed by an elected administration.
Its mission is to promote science in the fields related to the professional disciplines of its members, as well as engineering and technology more broadly, and to support their application for the economic, social and cultural development of the country, in accordance with the principles of sustainability and environmental protection.
All Greek citizens holding an engineering degree from a Greek polytechnic institution or an equivalent institution abroad are required to register as full members of the Technical Chamber of Greece.
To become a member of the Technical Chamber of Greece, engineers must hold a professional licence in one of the following disciplines:
• Civil Engineering
• Architecture
• Rural and Surveying Engineering
• Electrical and Computer Engineering
• Chemical Engineering
• Spatial Planning and Regional Development Engineering
• Environmental Engineering
• Production and Management Engineering
• Mechanical Engineering
• Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering
• Mining and Metallurgical Engineering
The Regional Department of Central and Western Thessaly of the Technical Chamber of Greece (TCG/CWT) is one of the Chamber’s 17 regional departments.
It was established in 1950, is headquartered in Larissa and covers the Regional Units of Larissa, Trikala and Karditsa.
At present, the Department represents 3,757 individually licensed engineers, 546 honorary members and 683 corporate entities.
The Department is housed in a privately owned, 2,000-square-metre building in Larissa, which includes certified training facilities, meeting rooms and offices.
Role and Objectives
The Technical Chamber of Greece serves as the official technical adviser to the Greek Government. In particular, it:
• Conducts studies, either on its own initiative or following an assignment or request, independently or in cooperation with other social or scientific organisations and chambers, on scientific, technical, techno-economic and development-related matters of public interest. It also submits opinions, either on its own initiative or upon request, concerning relevant legislation.
• Provides expert opinions, upon request from the competent authorities, public-sector bodies or professional organisations, on matters falling within its field of competence and within a specified reasonable period.
• Collects statistical data concerning the country’s engineering workforce, scientific, technical, construction and related industrial activities, technical materials, equipment and technology. It compiles statistics and provides relevant information to competent authorities and other organisations.
• Contributes to the effective preparation and implementation of development programmes, the sustainable use of natural resources, the improvement of quality of life and environmental protection. It also prepares, independently or in cooperation with other organisations, relevant studies and research, technical specifications, regulations, project contracts and study agreements.
• Contributes to the development of technical education programmes, the advancement of national research and technology, and the effective development, planning and organisation of the engineering workforce in accordance with the country’s development needs.
• Informs the public through announcements, publications, specialised editions and other appropriate means on matters falling within its field of competence, making technical issues and related challenges more accessible and easier to understand.
• Participates in international organisations, associations of chambers and international engineering associations. It develops relationships with corresponding organisations in other countries and organises conferences, exhibitions and other events to promote its objectives.
• Conducts technical expert assessments as part of its statutory responsibilities. Approximately 500 expert reports are prepared each year, covering matters such as building and mechanical engineering issues, disputes between citizens and public authorities, and disputes between private individuals. In accordance with the law, one third of the revenue generated through these assessments constitutes income for the Technical Chamber of Greece.
Services and Responsibilities towards Members
In relation to its members, the Technical Chamber of Greece:
• Organises professional examinations and grants licences for the practice of the engineering profession.
• Maintains official registers of engineers, registered engineering consultancies and technical companies.
• Ensures the collection of engineers’ statutory professional fees.
• Supports the employment, social security, professional recognition and protection of its members.
• Promotes their scientific development, access to information, professional training and continuing education.
• Publishes professional and scientific journals, newsletters and other specialised publications.
• Supports professional organisations representing engineers in activities related to the Chamber’s objectives.
• Examines new forms of professional organisation and employment for its members.
• Exercises disciplinary authority over its members, in accordance with the relevant provisions of its founding legislation.
As an official regional department of the Technical Chamber of Greece, the Regional Department of Central and Western Thessaly represents the Chamber within its geographical area and implements activities arising from the Chamber’s objectives on all matters concerning the region.
More specifically, the Department:
• Promotes the policies and strategic priorities of the Technical Chamber of Greece within the region.
• Contributes to the formulation of the Chamber’s policies on matters of broader importance.
• Communicates the concerns, needs and positions of the region to the central administration of the Chamber.
• Conducts first-instance disciplinary proceedings.
• Contributes to addressing the specific technical and development challenges of the region.
Participation in European Programmes
The Regional Department of Central and Western Thessaly is interested in participating in competitive and co-funded European Union programmes.

• Environment and climate change, including the regional and global effects of climate change on water resources
• Blue growth
• Natural disaster prevention
• Waste management
• Energy, energy-efficiency measures and the reduction of CO₂ emissions
• Technological development and innovation

• Youth and entrepreneurship
The Regional Department of Central and Western Thessaly has already acted as the coordinator of the project “In2C – Integration of Third-Country Nationals in the Construction Sector”, funded by the European Commission’s Asylum and Migration Fund.
